How To Choose The Right Rubber Stamp

Steps to Making a Simple Rubber Stamp

You can make a rubber stamp through different ways. One, you can use the process of vulcanization. Two, use laser engraving. Third, use polymer stamp manufacturing. However, all these processes entail a lot of costly materials and equipment. If you want to make rubber stamps with minimal cost, use erasers! It’s possible. Another plus is, you get to choose which pattern to put into your stamp. But before that, learn some things about how to make stamps the traditional way.

Charles Schultze patented the first rubber stamps vulcanizing press during the 1980s. This led way to the now familiar red rubber stamps. Moulds are used to create vulcanized stamps. On the other hand, cured rubber is used in laser engraving. It has to be cured since raw and traditional rubber is not acceptable any more. An even and blemish-free surface is necessary to create good imprints. A laser beam is used to engrave the pattern to the rubber.

Polymer stamp manufacturing is another stamp making method. It involves the process of converting the liquid form of stamp polymer into solid to make rubber stamps. All the above-mentioned processes entail costly materials and equipment. But, if you want to make a rubber stamp with almost no cost at all, it’s possible too! With just an eraser, carving tools and your creativity and craftsmanship, you can create simple rubber stamps.

Deciding on the design or pattern is the first step. Choose anything but it’s best to stick to simple, black and white patterns. Have it sized or scaled to fit your eraser. Then, trace the design using tracing paper and soft lead pencil (#2). Shade dark areas heavily, so as to leave a shiny and thick coat of pencil lead on the tracing paper.

Choosing the rubber eraser to use is the next step. You can try using white vinyl erasers, green rubber erasers, or hard red rubber erasers like “Pink Pearl”. Use a Staedtler-Mars eraser if you want to carve through it easily. Hard red erasers are suitable for those thin-lined and intricate patterns. If you want a bigger “canvas”, visit your local craft supplier and ask for special carving blocks.

Transferring the image to the eraser is the next step. Flip the tracing paper with the pattern facedown. Use a rounded stick to rub the back of the paper and transfer the design onto the eraser. Once done, you can clearly see your pattern on the eraser (reverse). If you want to make the design more visible, you can also use an ink pen to trace over the image.

You can also try more modern techniques to transfer the image onto the eraser. Again, place the tracing paper facedown on the eraser and either cover it with a cloth and use a clothes iron on low/medium heat to go over it for a few times or dampen it with nail polish remover/acetone. Afterwards, you can then carve away the “un-inked” areas. For best results, use an X-acto knife. Other tools you can use are woodcarver’s knives or Speedball cutter.

Attach your rubber eraser to a block of wood to finish your homemade rubber stamp. Use cement or heavy-duty glue to do this. There’s really no need to use machinery and expensive materials to make a stamp. With carving tools, an eraser and your imagination, you can create personalized and customized stamps that you can give to your close friends. Try carving more complex designs and surprise yourself!
