Steps to Making a Simple Rubber Stamp

There are several ways to make a rubber stamp. You can use the process of vulcanizing, laser engraving or polymer stamp manufacturing. And believe it or not, you can even make your own stamp out of rubber erasers! It’s a lot simpler than all those other processes, and it’s customizable since you get to decide the design of your stamp. But before that, here’s an overview on making stamps the traditional way.

The first rubber stamps vulcanizing press was patented by Charles Schultze during the 1980s. The well-known and recognizable red rubber stamps are vulcanized stamps. Vulcanized stamps make use of moulds. Laser engraving, on the other hand, makes use of a laser beam to carve through cured rubber. Traditional raw rubber that was previously used for vulcanized stamps just wouldn’t do anymore since rubber’s surface should be blemish free and even to create an acceptable imprint from a stamp die.

Polymer stamp manufacturing is another method to create rubber stamps. It involves altering the state of rubber stamps polymer from solid to liquid in order to make stamps. Again, these are very expensive methods and if you want to make simple stamps with less cost, turn to your creativity and craftsmanship and use erasers and carving tools to create your homemade rubber stamp.

First, decide on the design or pattern of your stamp. Some good, easy to do patterns are simple black and white figures. Or, you could do a symbol, your initials, etc. Just remember that it should fit on your eraser. You can also copy an image from a book by using tracing paper and a soft pencil (#2). Make sure you trace black areas thickly, so as to create a heavy, shiny coat of pencil lead on the paper.

Afterwards, it’s time to select the eraser to use. White vinyl erasers, green rubber erasers or hard red rubber (“Pink Pearl”) erasers would do. If you want to be able to cut easily through the eraser, go for a vinyl Staedtler-Mars eraser. But if you chose an intricate and finely detailed pattern with thin lines, go for hard red erasers. For bigger stamps, special carving blocks are available in your local craft supplier.

Next step is to transfer the image to the eraser. Place the tracing paper face down on the eraser. Then, using a rounded stick, rub the back of the paper to transfer the design onto the eraser. After that, you will be able to clearly see a reverse image of your pattern on your eraser. To make the design easier to see, you can also trace over the image using an ink pen.

To transfer the image, you can also experiment with more modern techniques. Instead of rubbing the image onto the eraser, you can try dampening it with acetone/nail polish remover. Or, you can also go over the design a few times by using a clothes iron (low/medium heat). Just remember to keep the paper facedown on the eraser. Then, using an X-acto knife, you can carve away areas that are not inked. Woodcarver’s knives or Speedball cutter are also some tools.

Attach your rubber eraser to a block of wood to finish your homemade rubber stamp. Use cement or heavy-duty glue to do this. There’s really no need to use machinery and expensive materials to make a stamp. With carving tools, an eraser and your imagination, you can create personalized and customized stamps that you can give to your close friends. Try carving more complex designs and surprise yourself!
