Making a Rubber Stamp with these Simple Steps

There are several ways to make a rubber stamp. You can use the process of vulcanizing, laser engraving or polymer stamp manufacturing. And believe it or not, you can even make your own stamp out of rubber erasers! It’s a lot simpler than all those other processes, and it’s customizable since you get to decide the design of your stamp. But before that, here’s an overview on making stamps the traditional way.

The first rubber stamps vulcanizing press was patented by Charles Schultze during the 1980s. The well-known and recognizable red rubber stamps are vulcanized stamps. Vulcanized stamps make use of moulds. Laser engraving, on the other hand, makes use of a laser beam to carve through cured rubber. Traditional raw rubber that was previously used for vulcanized stamps just wouldn’t do anymore since rubber’s surface should be blemish free and even to create an acceptable imprint from a stamp die.

Another form of stamp making is through polymer stamp manufacturing. The process involves converting the liquid form of rubber stamps polymer into solid to make stamps. All these processes require expensive equipments and materials. But it’s good to know, there’s one way for you to make a rubber stamp the easier way – through using erasers!

First, decide on the design or pattern of your stamp. Some good, easy to do patterns are simple black and white figures. Or, you could do a symbol, your initials, etc. Just remember that it should fit on your eraser. You can also copy an image from a book by using tracing paper and a soft pencil (#2). Make sure you trace black areas thickly, so as to create a heavy, shiny coat of pencil lead on the paper.

Choosing the rubber eraser to use is the next step. You can try using white vinyl erasers, green rubber erasers, or hard red rubber erasers like “Pink Pearl”. Use a Staedtler-Mars eraser if you want to carve through it easily. Hard red erasers are suitable for those thin-lined and intricate patterns. If you want a bigger “canvas”, visit your local craft supplier and ask for special carving blocks.

Transferring the image to the eraser is the next step. Flip the tracing paper with the pattern facedown. Use a rounded stick to rub the back of the paper and transfer the design onto the eraser. Once done, you can clearly see your pattern on the eraser (reverse). If you want to make the design more visible, you can also use an ink pen to trace over the image.

Modern techniques are also something you can experiment with. Rather than simple rubbing, try going over your pattern with a low or medium heat clothes iron for a few times. Or, you can dampen tracing paper with acetone or nail polish remover. Make sure that the patter is facedown. Once finished, just carve away the areas that are “un-inked”. An X-acto knife would be good for this job but woodcarver’s knives or Speedball cutter will also suffice.

Finally, cement the eraser to a chock of wood to finish your rubber stamp. With those steps, you can make personalized and simple stamps without the need of heavy machinery and expensive materials. You creativity, erasers and carving tools are all you need to make your very own stamp. As you get used to it, experiment with more intricate designs.
