Staedtler-Mars eraser, a white vinyl eraser is good if you want to be able to carve through it easily. Other erasers you can use are green rubber eraser. Afterwards, it’s time to transfer the image onto the erase. Position the tracing paper in such a way that the pattern is facedown on the eraser. Then, transfer the design by rubbing the back of the paper with a rounded stick. Once finished, expect to see a reverse image imprinted on your eraser. You can also trace over your pattern using an ink pen to make your design more visible.
You can also try more modern techniques to transfer the image onto the eraser. Again, place the tracing paper facedown on the eraser and either cover it with a cloth and use a clothes iron on low/medium heat to go over it for a few times or dampen it with nail polish remover/acetone. Afterwards, you can then carve away the “un-inked” areas. For best results, use an X-acto knife. Other tools you can use are woodcarver’s knives or Speedball cutter.
Finally, cement the eraser to a chock of wood to finish your rubber stamp. With those steps, you can make personalized and simple stamps without the need of heavy machinery and expensive materials. You creativity, erasers and carving tools are all you need to make your very own stamp. As you get used to it, experiment with more intricate designs.
