Steps on How to Make a Rubber Stamp the Easier Way
You can make a rubber stamp through different ways. One, you can use the process of vulcanization. Two, use laser engraving. Third, use polymer stamp manufacturing. However, all these processes entail a lot of costly materials and equipment. If you want to make rubber stamps with minimal cost, use erasers! Its possible. Another plus is, you get to choose which pattern to put into your stamp. But before that, learn some things about how to make stamps the traditional way.
During the 1890s, Charles Schultze patented the first rubber stamps vulcanizing press, which paved way to the traditional red rubber stamps that everyone is familiar with. The stamps are produced by using a mould. Meanwhile, in laser engraving, cured rubber is used and subjected to a laser beam that will engrave the design onto the stamp. Moreover, the rubber used should have a blemish-free and even surface to create a pleasing imprint from the stamp die.
Polymer stamp manufacturing is another method to create rubber stamps. It involves altering the state of rubber stamps polymer from solid to liquid in order to make stamps. Again, these are very expensive methods and if you want to make simple stamps with less cost, turn to your creativity and craftsmanship and use erasers and carving tools to create your homemade rubber stamp.
Deciding on the design or pattern is the first step. Choose anything but its best to stick to simple, black and white patterns. Have it sized or scaled to fit your eraser. Then, trace the design using tracing paper and soft lead pencil (#2). Shade dark areas heavily, so as to leave a shiny and thick coat of pencil lead on the tracing paper.
Next, decide what type of rubber eraser youre going to use. If you chose a detailed pattern, using hard red erasers would be perfect. Staedtler-Mars eraser, a white vinyl eraser is good if you want to be able to carve through it easily. Other erasers you can use are green rubber eraser. You can also use special carving blocks if you want bigger stamps. Visit your local craft supplier for this.
Afterwards, its time to transfer the image onto the erase. Position the tracing paper in such a way that the pattern is facedown on the eraser. Then, transfer the design by rubbing the back of the paper with a rounded stick. Once finished, expect to see a reverse image imprinted on your eraser. You can also trace over your pattern using an ink pen to make your design more visible.
To transfer the image, you can also experiment with more modern techniques. Instead of rubbing the image onto the eraser, you can try dampening it with acetone/nail polish remover. Or, you can also go over the design a few times by using a clothes iron (low/medium heat). Just remember to keep the paper facedown on the eraser. Then, using an X-acto knife, you can carve away areas that are not inked. Woodcarvers knives or Speedball cutter are also some tools.
Finally, cement the eraser to a chock of wood to finish your rubber stamp. With those steps, you can make personalized and simple stamps without the need of heavy machinery and expensive materials. You creativity, erasers and carving tools are all you need to make your very own stamp. As you get used to it, experiment with more intricate designs.
