There are several ways to make a rubber stamp. You can use the process of vulcanizing, laser engraving or polymer stamp manufacturing. And believe it or not, you can even make your own stamp out of rubber erasers! Its a lot simpler than all those other processes, and its customizable since you get to decide the design of your stamp. But before that, heres an overview on making stamps the traditional way.
The first rubber stamps vulcanizing press was patented by Charles Schultze during the 1980s. The well-known and recognizable red rubber stamps are vulcanized stamps. Vulcanized stamps make use of moulds. Laser engraving, on the other hand, makes use of a laser beam to carve through cured rubber. Traditional raw rubber that was previously used for vulcanized stamps just wouldnt do anymore since rubbers surface should be blemish free and even to create an acceptable imprint from a stamp die.

Polymer stamp manufacturing is another method to create rubber stamps. It involves altering the state of rubber stamps polymer from solid to liquid in order to make stamps. Again, these are very expensive methods and if you want to make simple stamps with less cost, turn to your creativity and craftsmanship and use erasers and carving tools to create your homemade rubber stamp.
Deciding on the design or pattern is the first step. Choose anything but its best to stick to simple, black and white patterns. Have it sized or scaled to fit your eraser. Then, trace the design using tracing paper and soft lead pencil (#2). Shade dark areas heavily, so as to leave a shiny and thick coat of pencil lead on the tracing paper.
Next, decide what type of rubber eraser youre going to use. If you chose a detailed pattern, using hard red erasers would be perfect. Staedtler-Mars eraser, a white vinyl eraser is good if you want to be able to carve through it easily. Other erasers you can use are green rubber eraser. You can also use special carving blocks if you want bigger stamps. Visit your local craft supplier for this.
Transferring the image to the eraser is the next step. Flip the tracing paper with the pattern facedown. Use a rounded stick to rub the back of the paper and transfer the design onto the eraser. Once done, you can clearly see your pattern on the eraser (reverse). If you want to make the design more visible, you can also use an ink pen to trace over the image.
You can also try more modern techniques to transfer the image onto the eraser. Again, place the tracing paper facedown on the eraser and either cover it with a cloth and use a clothes iron on low/medium heat to go over it for a few times or dampen it with nail polish remover/acetone. Afterwards, you can then carve away the un-inked areas. For best results, use an X-acto knife. Other tools you can use are woodcarvers knives or Speedball cutter.
And there you have it, your very own homemade rubber stamp! You can then attach the rubber eraser to a chock of wood using cement or heavy-duty glue to give your stamp a more finished look. Making stamps need not require machinery and costly materials. With just an eraser and some carving tools, youre set to make customized stamps. Experiment with more intricate designs as you get used to it.
