To make a rubber stamp, you can use several methods. You can create vulcanized, laser engraved, or polymer stamp manufactured stamps. But making a stamp out of rubber erasers? Although it sounds ridiculously simple, it produces great results! And the best part is, you get to choose what design or pattern to carve onto your stamp. But before going into detail with that, here’s a short introduction on traditional stamp making.
During the 1890s, Charles Schultze patented the first rubber stamps vulcanizing press, which paved way to the traditional red rubber stamps that everyone is familiar with. The stamps are produced by using a mould. Meanwhile, in laser engraving, cured rubber is used and subjected to a laser beam that will engrave the design onto the stamp. Moreover, the rubber used should have a blemish-free and even surface to create a pleasing imprint from the stamp die.

Deciding on the design or pattern is the first step. Choose anything but it’s best to stick to simple, black and white patterns. Have it sized or scaled to fit your eraser. Then, trace the design using tracing paper and soft lead pencil (#2). Shade dark areas heavily, so as to leave a shiny and thick coat of pencil lead on the tracing paper.
Next, decide what type of rubber eraser you’re going to use. If you chose a detailed pattern, using hard red erasers would be perfect. Staedtler-Mars eraser, a white vinyl eraser is good if you want to be able to carve through it easily. Other erasers you can use are green rubber eraser. Next step is to transfer the image to the eraser. Place the tracing paper face down on the eraser. Then, using a rounded stick, rub the back of the paper to transfer the design onto the eraser. After that, you will be able to clearly see a reverse image of your pattern on your eraser. To make the design easier to see, you can also trace over the image using an ink pen.
To transfer the image, you can also experiment with more modern techniques. Instead of rubbing the image onto the eraser, you can try dampening it with acetone/nail polish remover. Or, you can also go over the design a few times by using a clothes iron (low/medium heat). Just remember to keep the paper facedown on the eraser. Then, using an X-acto knife, you can carve away areas that are not inked. Woodcarver’s knives or Speedball cutter are also some tools.
And there you have it, your very own homemade rubber stamp! You can then attach the rubber eraser to a chock of wood using cement or heavy-duty glue to give your stamp a more finished look. Making stamps need not require machinery and costly materials. With just an eraser and some carving tools, you’re set to make customized stamps. Experiment with more intricate designs as you get used to it.
